Lhasa Blues

This music was written in response to a series of wonderfully evocative images from Tibet by British photographer Michael Calvert. It was performed live at the Rubin Museum in New York, as part of their international exhibition of works relating to the Dalai Lama, ‘The Missing Peace’.

Calvert has an extraordinary eye for landscape, texture and atmosphere. Over the course of a decade he has taken a series of photographs in and around Lhasa, which convey the regions unique blending of spiritual, human and secular concerns, into a vast weave of daily living and on going change quite unlike anything else on our planet.

The original conception for the work was as a multi media presentation utilizing environmental sound, music and image. Calvert wanted a certain kind of raw, low tech immediacy to the recording to help convey the bleaker, isolated aspects of his images.
